There are only two countries without a capital, Switzerland being one of them. Unofficially, though, the city of Bern, situated in the heart of the Alpine country, is considered the nation’s political center. Located on a peninsula that is engulfed by the Aare River, the old town of Bern is vast and beautiful. Particularly striking are the characteristic rooftops and pergolas.
The island of Krk has historically been a center for Croatian culture. Before the arrival of the Slavs, a plethora of different people had settled here, such as the Illyrian and Roman tribes. All of those cultures made use of the richness of nature by harvesting the fruits of the land and the sea. The prosperity resulted in beautiful fortified towns and a rich heritage, which can still be seen all over the island today.
Albeit situated close to the Alps, the city of Ljubljana has the charm of a mediterranean town. The city consists of specious squares and lovely little alleyways with a lot of history. There is much to discover in the capital of Slovenia.
A little-known fact about Austria is that it is one of the places in the world that is very rich in natural water sources. Water is used as drinking water and for agriculture, but also as an enormous source of power. Also, the water streams in the Alps are gorgeous, and there are numerous impressive waterfalls to be discovered.
The Alps are an extensive mountain range situated in the heart of Europe. They reach peaks up to 4.800 meters in height and cover a wide range of different climate zones. Traveling the Alps is taking in pure nature.
Depending on the season, traveling the Alps can be a very different experience. In summer the hills seem more green and alive than in any other other time of the year. The temperatures up in the hills tend to be more temperate than in the city, and it is a joy to wander around and discover nature high in the skies.
